Having been in the web design business for quite some time now, I have come across several design trends through the last few years.
In Uganda and especially Kampala, most businesses actually can hardly manage a proper website that can drive in traffic to the door steps of the business. Could be due to the wrong perspective business owners have of websites or due to inability to invest in content generation. It would be very hard to convince a Ugandan business to think of having a mobile site leave alone even having a site. This is whereby I think Responsive design becomes very important.
As much as I may have seen or heard and even tried different design methodologies, I am yet to try one better than Responsive design.
In my humble opinion, I think this is a cutting edge solution so far reached in web design technology due to its very many advantages that come with it.
Costs Savings: One website, all devices means your website only has to be developed once, significantly reducing the cost.
Improved SEO: Only one site to optimize – one URL accumulates all links, PageRank, Page Authority, etc.
User friendly: Website adjusts to any screen size, making it more user friendly.
Collect all social data with a single URL: One URL to share all of the shares, likes, tweets, and inbound links.
Less maintenance: Only one website to be updated rather than desktop and mobile site updates.
Lower hosting costs: Only one website to be hosted
Less chance of errors: As only one website to be updated
No site redirects: – RWD involves no redirects to take care of.
Conversions may increase: – Due to improved user experience.
Google Analytics: One complete view for all the traffic. To get insights on the mobile visitors, create a “mobile-only” segment
No login problems between mobile & desktop site
Prevents canonical issues and duplicate content penalties
Having said that responsive web design is not a one size fits all solution and there are disadvantages but that’s for another day….
As a Drupal Developer in a third world country, I think this is a solution of choice especially where many businesses can’t afford fully fledged mobile sites due to their business turnover. Actually responsive design basically tries to solve the simple problem of not having to design for every other design OS that comes in the market.
